Because we honor a young woman who died too soon of breast cancer. In 1987, the foundation was formed to honor a very public woman known for her sensitive lyrics and musical line. But it is not the public persona the foundation honors but the private Linda, who was known for her generous and nurturing heart.
Because education and mammograms are the first line of defense against breast cancer. Initially formed to educate the public about the signs, symptoms, and the developing research of breast cancer, the foundation found an unmet need – women without medical insurance needing yearly mammograms. Today the public is informed about the need for yearly mammograms but the growing health insurance disparity makes the foundation’s core mission of providing screenings and diagnostic tests just as essential. Until the causes of breast cancer are discovered, the first line of defense is education and yearly mammograms.
Because we are the alternative for women with little or no health insurance. The women Linda Creed Breast Cancer Foundation serve are working women, making it on their own, providing for themselves and their dependents. But they work at jobs that leave little disposable and personal well-care is often last on the list.
Because we are an agent of change locally and nationally. Despite great strides in breast cancer research we still don’t know what causes breast cancer and a cure is still elusive. Until we do, we need to continue to apply pressure to our legislators, policy makers, and scientists to stay the course. Our volunteer advocates are there making sure essential research dollars are available and that legislation that furthers the path of science is passed.
Because our vow is we will be there until breast cancer is not. Each day we take calls from women frightened and needing a guiding hand. Some have found a lump, some have had a routine mammogram that needs follow up, some are in treatment now and falling behind financially. We are there offering calm assurance, resources, and sometimes just a shoulder to cry on.
